How Dr. Shah is Training the Next Generation
What started as an academic observation has turned into a global educational movement. While earning his Doctorate in Education, Dr. Shah realized that traditional teaching methods often failed to connect experts with novices effectively. His solution was CFAR (Complex Foot and Ankle Reconstruction), a virtual lecture series designed to close that gap.
Today, CFAR is a thriving community of nearly 3,000 members, serving as a vital resource for surgeons in the first five years of their careers. Dr. Shah curates and moderates every session, focusing on complex cases and innovative techniques that improve patient outcomes.
The program’s success lies in its diversity. By leveraging his philanthropic network, Dr. Shah brings in international faculty to teach and serve on panels. This cross-border collaboration allows young surgeons to learn not just from local mentors, but from a global roster of experts, fostering a deeper and more versatile understanding of foot and ankle surgery.
Dr. Shah’s Biomechanics-Driven Footwear Collaboration
Dr. Shah brings his talent, knowledge, and expertise to collaborate with a company interested in designing a shoe that relieves pain during walking. Dr. Shah's expertise in functional biomechanics and surgery enables him to partner with like-minded, goal-oriented groups at the forefront of developing shoes to mitigate the many difficulties associated with traditional shoes. His collaboration ensures that the shoes are designed with a deep understanding of foot anatomy and movement. This includes issues like arch support contact, pressure points, gait mechanics, alignment, and balance. This partnership aims to create innovative footwear that enhances comfort, reduces the risk of injury, and improves overall mobility for everyone. The goal is to avoid pain and problems commonly experienced after wearing shoes.
Advancing Pediatric Foot Care in El Salvador, 2026
As a member of Team Operation Footprint (operationfootprint.org), Dr. Shah just finished a memorable mission trip to Bloom Children's Hospital in San Salvador, El Salvador. This year, he was one of four senior surgeons assigned to teach, collaborate, and perform surgery on children with genetic conditions that cause severe foot and ankle deformities. He worked closely with local orthopedic surgeons to share advanced techniques and provide care for children who might otherwise lack access to such specialized treatment. This mission improved patients' quality of life and strengthened international pediatric orthopedic collaboration.
Team Operation Footprint operated on seventeen children and nineteen feet with deformities such as club feet, vertical talus, tumors, and several spastic deformities. These surgeries not only corrected physical impairments but also gave the children hope for a more active and independent future. Dr. Shah and his team also trained local staff, ensuring sustainable care and knowledge transfer. This mission exemplified the power of collaboration in addressing complex medical challenges globally.
Team Operation Footprint will return to Bloom Children's Hospital in June-July 2026 for another surgical mission.
Dr. Shah Appointed to ACPM Education Committee
The American College of Podiatric Medicine (ACPM) has long stood at the forefront of the profession, dedicated to educating members on the most current principles of foot and ankle care. In 2025, Dr. Shah was invited not only to share his global experience but also to help shape the future of podiatric education.
Dr. Shah presented a featured lecture titled "Scalpel to Society: A Measurable Impact of Operation Footprint." Moving beyond clinical outcomes, this presentation offered a deep dive into the humanitarian side of medicine. Dr. Shah traced the historical evolution of Operation Footprint, analyzed its current state, and outlined its ambitious future goals, demonstrating to attendees how surgical expertise can drive tangible societal change on a global scale.
Diabetic foot structures are notoriously difficult to manage. By sharing a "pragmatic" framework, Dr. Shah provided other surgeons with actionable techniques to handle high-risk complications, ultimately aiming to improve survival rates and quality of life for diabetic patients nationwide.
Dr. Shah has accepted this pivotal role and is eager to apply his academic and clinical insights to assist the committee. He looks forward to enhancing the College's education directives and ensuring the next generation of podiatrists is equipped with the knowledge to succeed.

Exclusive Behind-the-Scenes at Adidas HQ, Herzogenaurach, Germany
Dr. Shah was one of only six surgeons from the United States invited to an exclusive, behind-the-scenes summit at the Adidas World Headquarters in Herzogenaurach, Germany. Hosted by the Adidas Innovations Team, this tour was designed to bridge the gap between medical expertise and performance engineering. Dr. Shah and his colleagues were given rare access to the facility's inner workings, including the renowned Athlete's Testing Lab, where they observed how shoe mechanics are rigorously tested against the demands of human physiology.
The visit was not just observational; it was collaborative. Dr. Shah engaged directly with designers and engineers to discuss shoe concepts through the lens of a physician. By sharing insights on foot structure, injury prevention, and biomechanics, Dr. Shah helped influence how future footwear can better serve both elite athletes and everyday patients.
The 2025 Surgical Mission to El Salvador
In 2025, Operation Footprint successfully completed another vital mission in San Salvador, continuing its long-standing partnership with Bloom Children's Hospital. Dr. Shah joined a specialized team of surgeons to treat a particularly vulnerable patient population. Unlike typical orthopedic missions, this trip focused heavily on children suffering from spinal cord diseases. These underlying neurological conditions add significant layers of difficulty to reconstructive surgery, requiring advanced planning and precise execution. Despite these challenges, Dr. Shah and the team successfully navigated the complex anatomy of these cases, restoring mobility and hope to children who previously had limited surgical options.
Dr. Shah and Operation Footprint Forge New Alliances in Munich
In December 2025, Dr. Shah traveled to Munich, Germany, to represent Operation Footprint at the 33rd International Symposium for Foot Surgery.
While the symposium is a premier event for technical exchange, Dr. Shah’s attendance marked a strategic effort to deepen collaboration between Operation Footprint and the European medical community. The goal was clear: to leverage a mutual global presence to amplify the impact of humanitarian aid.

Dr. Shah Expands Global Reach in Honduras
In January 2025, Dr. Shah returned to Honduras to mark a significant personal milestone: his 25th year of philanthropic service with Operation Footprint operationfootprint.org.
While Dr. Shah has spent decades performing life-changing surgeries for children with genetic lower-extremity conditions, this year’s mission reflected a powerful evolution in his role. Serving as Co-Director and Senior Surgeon, Dr. Shah focused his efforts on the next generation, mentoring younger surgeons in the complex art of reconstructive surgery.
The 2025 mission also marked a historic expansion for the team. For the first time, the brigade welcomed a specialist from a non-hosting country: Dr. Evelyn Kuong, a renowned pediatric orthopedic surgeon from Hong Kong. Her presence, alongside a U.S. residency director and attendees from multiple teaching programs, transformed the operating room into a global classroom.
For Dr. Shah, the mission is no longer just about the surgeries he performs personally, it is about building a sustainable legacy of care that spans continents.
Leading Through Education
Operation Footprint did more than just attend; they were a key partner in the event. The organization sponsored a dedicated portion of the conference, where their education team presented a series of lectures. These sessions were pivotal in raising awareness about the importance of philanthropic surgery and the complexities of treating neglected cases in underserved regions.
A Future of Collaboration
The meeting proved highly successful, resulting in the framework for a promising new partnership. Discussions focused on a bilateral agreement that will see
- Cross-Conference Lecturing: An exchange of expertise where German and American surgeons present at each other’s respective conferences.
- Joint Surgical Camps: A commitment to unite forces in the field, combining resources and talent to staff surgical camps globally.
By solidifying this bond with German surgeons, Dr. Shah and Operation Footprint are ensuring that the mission to help children walk extends further than ever before.
